The Capella Mallorquina, a prestigious Majorcan chorale founded by B. Julià on 1966, has been directed since 1999 by Josep M. Moreno. Sponsored by the Fundació Barceló, it carries out an important season of concerts in Majorca. Integrated by a group that oscillates between the 60 and 100 members, their performances total almost a thousand with a repertoire of more than 800 works.
The Capella has performed in the most important capitals of the world and both national and international music critics; as well as composers, musicians and directors, have always praised the high vocal standard of the formation. Following the chorale’s New York performance, the New York Times reported, "the Capella is a vocal group of the highest standards, equal to the best in Europe".
The choir has performed with prestigious orchestras, soloists and directors and has also recorded several CDs. Radio and TV frequently relay their concerts. It has released numerous works of contemporary composers.
The Capella has also obtained numerous plaques and medals from its performances outside Majorca as well as gaining recognition and numerous prizes on the island.
Among others, the Capella Mallorquina can claim the merit of initiating in Majorca an historical era by demonstrating to all the island’s towns the pure beauty of polyphonic song, stimulating the creation of choral groups over the last 35 years. The Capella has always been considered, not only the first choral organisation of its kind, but also the innovator of the choral movement of the Balearic Islands.
